From a remote village in West Sikkim to representing the nation on international grounds, Lako Phuti Bhutia has become a symbol of determination and inspiration. As one of the first women from Sikkim to play for the India women’s national football team, her journey continues to motivate young girls across the Northeast.

Humble Beginnings in the Hills

Born in Sribadam, West Sikkim, Lako Phuti Bhutia’s football journey began in the most humble wayβ€”playing with a handmade ball. Inspired by her elder sister Nima Lhamu Bhutia, she developed a passion for the sport at a young age.

Her talent was nurtured at the Mangalbari Women’s Football Academy, under the guidance of coach Palden Bhutia, where she refined her skills and built a strong foundation.

Rising Through the National Ranks

Lako Phuti Bhutia’s dedication quickly earned her national recognition:

  • Selected for the India U-19 team in 2012, participating in AFC qualifiers in Malaysia
  • Made her senior national team debut in 2012 during AFC qualifiers in Palestine
  • Earned 8 international caps and scored 1 goal
  • Part of the Indian team that won the SAFF Women’s Championship in 2014

Her presence in the national team marked a historic step for women footballers from Sikkim.

Club Career and Achievements

Bhutia’s professional journey included playing for several clubs across India and abroad:

  • Bodyline SC (2014–2017)
  • New Radiant SC – Winner of the FAM Women’s Championship
  • Gokulam Kerala FC – Runner-up in the Indian Women’s League (2018)
  • Sunrise WFC (Bhutan) – Participation in Bhutan Women’s National Championship
