Omi Gurung: The β€œGreen Man of Sikkim” Leading India’s Sustainable Fashion Movement

At a time when climate change and sustainability have become global priorities, Omi Gurung stands as a pioneering force from Sikkimβ€”blending fashion, environmental activism, and social entrepreneurship into a powerful movement. Widely known as the β€œGreen Man of Sikkim,” his journey reflects over a decade of relentless advocacy for eco-conscious living and responsible design.

Born as Sandeep Gurung on February 24, 1986, in Gangtok, Omi’s early life was rooted in a family that valued education and public service. He pursued his schooling at Holy Cross School Tadong before earning a degree in fashion from the Vogue Institute of Art and Design. Complementing his creative pursuits, he also obtained a postgraduate diploma in journalism from the Sri Sri Centre for Media Studiesβ€”a foundation that would later strengthen his voice as an advocate and storyteller.

A Pioneer in Sustainable Fashion

Omi Gurung’s work is deeply rooted in the philosophy of sustainability. As an eco-fashion pioneer, he has consistently championed the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, transforming waste into wearable art and promoting responsible consumption.

In 2011, he founded Green Gangtokβ€”the region’s first eco-boutique. The initiative introduced a new way of thinking about fashion, offering upcycled apparel, natural products, and handcrafted accessories created by local artisans. More than just a store, Green Gangtok became a movement, inspiring communities to rethink waste and embrace sustainability.

Even earlier, in 2010, he launched Oh My India, a social initiative focused on reducing domestic waste and encouraging creative recycling practices across the country. These early efforts laid the groundwork for his larger mission of environmental awareness.

From Media to Global Advocacy

Before dedicating himself fully to social entrepreneurship, Omi made his mark in journalism. At just 22, he served as a fashion editor for a youth magazine and later as editor of Dateline Bangalore, gaining valuable insight into media and communication.

His influence soon expanded globally. As a youth ambassador for the Earth Day Network, he represented India in the β€œMy Future, My Voice” campaign, advocating for climate action on international platforms.

He also contributed as a global climate consultant for the award-winning animated film Songs of the Earth, which premiered at the COP26 in Glasgowβ€”further cementing his role as a voice for environmental change.

Omi Gurung’s dedication has earned him some of the highest recognitions in sustainability and social impact:

  • United Nations Karmaveer Chakra Awards
    • Gold (2023)

By supporting local artisans, reducing waste, and advocating for climate awareness, he has redefined what it means to be a designer in the modern world.
